Picture of hornbookAt our March meeting, the hornbook project from Ellen Chester of With My Needle will be the program.  Check out the description on Ellen Chester's web site www.withmyneedle.com. Click on the image at the right for a larger picture.

Sign ups for our Hornbook Project will be taken only during December and January.   The cost of the entire kit---hornbook, pattern, linen, silk, and finishing--will be $30.  This MUST BE PAID at the time of signup.  You can choose 32 or 36 count linen and blue, green or red silk. The deadline for the project will be the January 11th meeting.

If you cannot attend either the December or January meeting but wish to do this project---send a check for $30 payable to LMSG to Carol Schaal (9742 S. 54th Ave., Oak Lawn, IL 60453) by January 11th.  Please include your email address.

Highlights

We began our March meeting with a short business meeting. We voted on and passed updates to our by-laws and there were some announcements:

 

  • In April, Amy Keaton will present part three of her sampler collection.
  • There is no meeting scheduled for May.
  • In June, Margriet Hogue will present a workshop. Deadline for signing up is March 31st. The teacher's fee for the workshop will be about $75. There must be a minimum of 12 people to have the workshop. We don't have 12 people signed up yet, so if you intend to take the workshop, make sure you sign up by March 31st.

Mary Ann Anderson gave us an update on the progress of the 2009 Anniversary project. All of the letters are now taken, but if you haven't signed up yet, you can pick from numbers, motifs or bands. Mary Ann gave us a quick look at several sheets that have already been completed so that we could get an idea of what others have done. She stressed that each will be different and individual and that is what will make it fun. You can also contribute a poem or drawing.

The program was turned over to Carol Schaal to distribute the Quaker Hornbook kits. There were 28 people who signed up. Carol put together the kits including the hornbook, chart, thread and and linen. She passed out an article on the history of hornbooks and talked a bit about them. The stitching is just cross stitch, but you will definitely have a chance to practice your over 1 skills. Carol also gave us a hint on how to do a row of over 1s: do a tent stitch in one direction and then do the tent stitch back in the opposite direction. This uses more thread which gives more body to the the completed piece. You also don't have to be concerned about losing stitches! We enjoyed opening the kits and getting started on the project. Carol had completed two hornbooks that she passed around the room for us to look at.

   

Hope to see everyone in April for part three of Amy's sampler collection. You won't want to miss it! You'll get a chance learn about some of her antique samplers and to examine them up close.
