This is the time to celebrate LMSG 4th Anniversary!  This year we are throwing a birthday party for the members. There will be cake and drinks for all. There will also be a party favor for those who signed up at the September meeting or notified Roberta by email before September 15th.

YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO GET YOUR PARTY FAVOR AT THE OCT. MEETING--NO FAVORS WILL BE SENT VIA THE MAIL!!!

You may be wondering what this favor is--here's a hint or two: It involves Nancy Sturgeon, an original design for the occasion and silk gauze.

Highlights

Happy 4th birthday to the Lake Michigan Sampler Guild!

A birthday is always a good excuse for a party, so we celebrated with cake, soft drinks, coffee and other goodies.

In between bites of delicious chocolate cake, we had a chance to talk to each other and share stories about the projects we are working on.

Members who attended the meeting received a gift from the guild: a mini needlepoint sampler on 40 count silk gauze designed by Nancy Sturgeon of Threads Through Time.  Thanks, Nancy, for making our 4th birthday special! Those who signed up for the free gift also received charts for several of Nancy's full size sampler designs.

The nominating committee announced their recommendations for offices with terms expiring at the end of 2002. Thanks to those who volunteered to help. The recommendations were:

  • Treasurer - Sue Hamer
  • Assistant Program Chairman - Kathy Bourne
  • President - Leslie Lewis

Carol Schaal brought in six different samplers. The first four were a set that included on sampler for each season of the year from the Drawn Thread.

Spring Summer Fall Winter

Carol recently attended a class by Linn Skinner titled "Step Back in TIme" where she learned about a late 19th century plain sewing sampler. The sampler design was composed of stitches from a book published in the 1800's that contained a chapter on marking. Originally, the book was used to teach orphans how to do stitches to mark linens. The instructions given out for the sampler included a reprint of the chapter in the original book.

Carol also brought in the "Victorian Garden Sampler" designed by Drawn Thread.

Pat Carlson finished Merry Cox's "Swan Lake" drawstring mending bag. This project was taught as a LMSG workshop on June 8th. The mending bag is done in red and white toile. The kit included a scissors fob, a button bag and a ruler holder. Quick work, Pat!

Pat also showed us a wooden box with a stitched top designed by Eilene Cross (German 1682 excerpt from Santa Fe Museum of International Folk Art).

Lynn McVey brought a sampler to share with us from Birds of a Feather titled "Happy Hearts". The sampler was stitched on BOAF Meadowlark linen. Lynn told us about her experiences with washing and preparing the linen

Judy Roubick brought in another one of her prize winning samplers: "Common Ground" by Just Nan done in silk. The sampler contained beautiful colors and many unique charms. Congratulations, Judy!

Marilyn Fettinger brought a millennium 2000 sampler based on a design by Mary Garry. She replaced the picture at the bottom of the original sampler with her own design containing the initials of the members of her family, evergreen trees and her house. The verse reads:

Marilyn Fettinger's work
began in the 224th year
of the Independence
of the United States of
America Lake Villa, IL
The Dawn of a New Century
Millennium 2000

We hope to see you at the next meeting when Joanne Harvey will present a slide lecture on Ann Holewll era samplers. Remember to bring along your show and tell items to share with others who attend.

The November meeting will be held at
Patton House on November 17th at 12:30.
