The end of the 17th century saw a dramatic stylistic change in the design format of
the Anglo American sampler. During the first quarter of the 18th century, three distinctive
styles can be identified in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Boston, Massachusetts, and
Newport, Rhode Island. Our focus will be on samplers worked in Newport, Rhode Island.
The beginning of the century samplers were worked in "the English style". Gradually
an elegant form of sampler making emerged in Newport. The styles developed there greatly
influenced other areas of sampler making in Rhode Island.
 FRANCES
AYRAULT 1725-1726 Antique Reproduction Sampler
The little sampler was the first attempt at sampler embroidery by Frances Ayrault
of Newport, Rhode Island. She was born September 23, 1718. The upper portion displays
a rendition of the popular Irish Stitch pattern worked in Cross Stitch. Frances then
recorded various sets of initials of her twelve brothers and sisters. It is such an
endearing little sampler and is best described by the words chosen by Frances to end
the piece, Frances Ayrault her first sampler.
The sampler will be worked on either 34 or 40 count linen, your choice with DMC floss
in Cross Stitch.
