March 2009 The Rachel Hyde Sampler was stitched by Katie Simmer from a reproduction by Threads Through Time. Along with the chart Nancy Sturgeon included a lengthy history of Rachel and her family. Unfortunately the chart is out of print. Rachel was born in Connecticut in 1761 and died in 1845. She stitched the sampler in 1775 at the age of 14. It is assumed that the sampler came to Illinois in 1857 when Rachel's son and his family moved to Whiteside County in northern Illinois. The original sampler is now in the collection of the Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society Museum in Sterling, Illinois. Click on the image for a larger picture. |
